The Coke Truck field shifted last week and you can see it in the data. Three teams switched to a stiffer right-rear and the average lap is up a tenth across the top 10. That looks like progress until you look at the lap-to-lap variance, which is up 40%. The trucks are faster on a perfect lap and worse on a typical one. That's a setup that wins one race a season and finishes mid-pack the other twelve.

So we went the other way. The OSC Truck baseline now runs 50 lb softer on the right-rear than the iRacing default. Here's why.

The Tire Model Changed

iRacing rolled out a Truck tire revision in Week 9 that doesn't sound like much in the patch notes - "minor adjustment to camber wear at heat" - but the effect is real. Right-rear camber wear comes on about 4 laps earlier in a green-flag run than it did at the start of the season. That changes the window where the tire is in its happy zone from "laps 6 through 28" to "laps 6 through 22." Six fewer laps where you can lean on the tire.

Stiffer rear-right makes the tire work harder, which gets you to the happy window faster but burns through it earlier. Softer rear-right is the opposite. It delays the peak by a lap or two but extends the window through the end of a typical stint.

In Week 9 we were on the stiffer side and our trucks were quick early and tight late. In Week 10 the field was averaging a tighter end-of-stint truck and we were finishing two or three positions behind where we'd qualified. We pulled the spring, ran the file in Tuesday practice, and the data was unambiguous.

What the Change Does on Track

Corner exit is the thing that benefits. With a softer rear-right, the truck rotates less aggressively off the throttle and the tire stays planted further into the corner exit. You can be on power 0.2 seconds earlier on a half-mile and 0.1 seconds earlier on a mile-and-a-half. That's basically the entire margin you need to gain a position into the next corner.

The cost is that on a perfect green-flag lap with new tires, you're slightly slower into the corner. The truck is doing less of the work for you on entry. You have to ask more from your initial brake-pressure modulation. That's a trade most drivers will take if it means the truck still rotates the same way on lap 25 as it did on lap 5.

What Stays the Same

We didn't touch:

  • Front spring (baseline).
  • Rear spring left side (baseline).
  • Cross-weight (baseline + 0.3% from default, where we usually are).
  • Tire pressures (baseline).
  • Brake bias (start at 55%, move to 55.5% by lap 8 - same call as the last three weeks).

The only change is the right-rear 50 lb softer. That's it. If you ran our Week 9 file and it felt good, you can run this week's file with confidence. The only thing different is the truck stays competitive through the last 8 laps of a 30-lap stint, where the Week 9 file was starting to lose rotation by lap 22.
